Blood Brothers

Once again the award winning Blood Brothers hits the West End making this its twenty first successful years on London’s West End. This makes Blood Brothers the musical one of the longest running shows to date. The Musical has also seen great success on New York’s Broadway receiving seven Tony Award nominations in addition to being voted best musical in London four times. However, the show was not initially successful.

It was originally written by Willy Russell for a school production but he made it into a musical in 1983 where it opened at Liverpool Playhouse. From here the producer, Bill Kenwright, re-branded it and launched it on the West End in 1988 where its long running success began.

The musical starts with a dark scene of two stretchers carrying off two bodies. The story then rewinds and eventually reveals that the two protagonists are unaware that they are brothers. They grew up in separate families as their poor mother couldn’t afford to raise the twins alone. Their lives couldn’t be more different as one graduates university while the other serves time in prison. This compelling musical is deeply moving and truly deserves the title as a hit musical.
