The infamous spooky play, The Women in Black, has been running as a play for twelve years. The Susan Hull horror novel was written by Stephen Mallatratt and was first performed in Scarborough at the Theatre by the Sea in 1987. The play thrilled audiences with its mystery plot and interactive nature. The play features the woman in black appearing in the aisle of the audience and in the few empty seats in the theatre. The winning performance quickly moved to the West End in the February of 1989 where it opened at the Strand Theatre. The play moved to its current destination at the Fortune Theatre in 1990 where it has continuously been running ever since.

It is currently taking bookings until January 2010 whereby a tour of the United Kingdom is expected shortly after. The ghostly story revolves around the memories of Arthur Kipps, an elderly man who is haunted by the image of the black woman. Arthur hires a young actor to help him relive his memory and finally solve the mystery of the woman in black. However, in reliving his memory Arthur results in bringing the past back to life as we see the return of the woman in black.

Stomp is the creation of Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas. They created a show that does not include a particular plot of dialogue; it is a totally new musical experience. The musical is told through percussion and percussion only. The musical first opened in Brighton in 1991 and was a hit from the off. It quickly progressed to the stages of New York’s Broadway in 1994 where its success continued.

The reviews for the percussion musical remained positive for ten years thanks to the performances on Broadway at the Orpheum Theatre. This continued interest in the musical led to Stomp once again gracing the stage of the West End. In 2002 the musical opened at the Vaudeville Theatre where it received the same success as it did on Broadway. In September 2007 the musical moved to the Ambassadors Theatre where it continues today.

The musical is booking until October 2009 and is expected to produce sell out shows until this date. The success of the musical includes a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Choreography and the cast of the show have seen great heights of fame including advertising with Coca Cola and American chain Target. The hype surrounding Stomp continues.

The camp classic Priscilla Queen of the Desert is opening in the West End’s Palace Theatre on the 23rd March 2009. However there will be previews on the 10th March. The musical has generated quite a buzz as it approaches issues facing the gay world and for incorporating an Aboriginal tribe into the production. The merging of these two groups that are often left on the outskirts of Australia society is a cleverly conscious decision.

Due to this the production has created a significant cultural impact on the Australia theatre scene. It is considered to be a new cult classic. The production at the Palace Theatre is set to include Jason Donovan as its star. However, the cast for the production is subject to change therefore nothing is yet guaranteed. The stage adaptation was made from the Oscar winning comedy film from 1994, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

The musical is expected to generate the same feelings on the West End and create the same impact upon the gay world. The camp classic is expected to sell out fast as the musical about three drag queens and their journey across Australia in which they find love and friendship is sure to be a sell out show night after night! Priscilla Queen of the Desert tickets are still available so don’t hesitate to book your and enjoys a great night at the theatre.

The musical Phantom of the Opera was written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and was first performed on the West End in 1986.

Location: Theatre Royal Dury Lane

Theatre legend Cameron Mackintosh is presenting the current incarnation of Oliver! at the Theatre Royal on Dury Lane. Audiences have been flocking to the production hoping to witness some big stars take on the lead roles and the media has been reporting on the development of the show since the start. But then a production such as this deserves the attention, after all it is based on the classic story by the iconic Charles Dickens.

But the popularity is also due to the role of Fagin currently being occupied by Blackadder and Mr Bean star Rowan Atkinson, who has been blowing audiences away since it opened. When he steps down he will also be replaced by another comic actor who has been seen in countless television sitcoms and hit movies like Gladiator and The Mummy – Omid Djalili. These big names will have worked alongside Jodie Prenger as Nancy, who won the role after appearing in a BBC talent competition called I’d Do Anything.

By witnessing this great show you will be captivated by the timeless story of the 19th century boy Oliver. The show is famous for the iconic scene where the young boy dares to ask that legendary question at a dinner hall in a workhouse – “Please sir, can I have some more?” It is a bold action, but it leads him into a lot of trouble, getting him kicked out with a dark path to follow. After he is forced to leave he is sold out as an apprentice undertaker. But as bad as it has already become, the journey does not end there for poor Oliver as he gets into even more trouble and forced to go on the run. It is at this point that he is lead further and further into 19th century London’s criminal underworld where he will meet a range of characters including the well known Artful Dodger.

This production is being housed at the Theatre Royal on Dury Lane, a site enriched with history. Although the current building dates back to 1812 with various renovations leading it to the modern day, there has been a theatre on this land on Catherine Street since 1660. As with many London venues a visit here is not just a trip to the theatre, but also a visit to a historical attraction. It means that the theatre stood during a time when Dickens himself penned the famous story of Oliver!

Oliver tickets are avilable at the box office form a very resonable price so you can enjoy the magic of this West End show for yourself.

Location: The Queen’s Theatre

What better way is there to enjoy the West End of London than a trip to see the world famous Les Misérables, currently in its 23rd year at the Queen’s Theatre in London? Its long run makes it the longest running musical ever, surpassing even the world famous Cats. It truly is a memorable musical of a romance set against the backdrop of the French Revolution. Such is the show’s popularity that it has also been seen around the world in over forty different countries and translated into more then twenty different languages.

On its 23rd birthday it was hailed for its popularity and longevity with its star Drew Sarich appearing onstage to make a memorable speech marking the occasion. As a result of its long stay it could boast being the longest running musical in all of London, having finally beating out Cats which had completed its run years earlier.

Since it opened it has been housed in various venues, including both the Barbican Theatre (1985) and Palace Theatre (1985-2004) before moving to its current home in the form of the Queen’s Theatre (2004-).

It’s no wonder that the show has found success, with a story that inspires generations of people and is familiar to almost everyone. When the show opens we are taken back to a time of change in France as the revolution holds its grip, paving way for a new form of government in replace of its former monarchy. Les Misérables concerns 19th century characters and how their lives progress over a period of two decades. We are introduced to the character of Jean Valjean – a former convict who arrives back in town with the hope of redeeming himself for his old wrongs. We look at his actions and the reasons behind them as Les Misérables looks at the society of the time and casts a message concerning the 19th century setting. But this is a musical, so along the way we are treated to some well known songs, including ‘On My Own’, ‘Do You Hear The People Sing?’ and ‘One Day More’ amongst others. So take a trip through history to the time of Napoleon with Les Misérables and witness a story that has been told with many big names over the years, including Alun Armstrong, Michael Ball, Tracie Bennett and Colm Wilkinson.
So make sure you get tickets for Les Misérables and be part of a monumental West End show!

Grease has been a successful show in both New York’s Broadway and London’s West End for over thirty years. The musical opened in a theatre in Chicago in 1971 and created such interest that within a year it was playing in Broadway.

The show quickly began to generate interest within the UK and as such opened in the West End in 1973 with Richard Gere starring as the male lead, Danny. The success of the musical led to interest for a film, the film version was made in 1978 and has remained a top selling blockbuster ever since. Both the musical and the film are considered pop culture classics and are enjoyed by audiences of all ages.

The musical includes songs such as Summer Nights, Greased Lightening, Born to Hand Jive and Beauty School Dropout that have become massive hits and creates a greater atmosphere during the shows as audiences know the words to sing along. Piccadilly Theatre is the home for this year’s performance of Grease. The show has been as successful as all previous performances and lives up to the title of being one of Broadway’s and the West End’s longest running shows. Grease is a truly classic musical experience.
